Our Program
Josie introduced Sandy Hearing of the Cumberland County Women’s Hall of Fame! Sandy is Rotary’s Youth Services Director. She introduced 3 of our RYLA students that went to Stockton this summer. Isaac, Taylor and Rachel came up to tell us a little bit about their experience with RYLA. Taylor’s mother also attended the meeting. She is a guidance counselor at Schalick. All 3 students came from Schalick.
They thanked us all for sponsoring them. Our sponsorship allowed them the opportunity to be able to go to RYLA, make new connections with people and they had a wonderful time. When they got there, they had no idea they would get so close with so many new people. Some new friends were from other areas, traveling hours to get there. Every day they would have a new speaker. The lectures were very insightful. They had career nights, there was a focus on leadership with exercises to prep them for Senior year. They learned about all the different fields on the campus and had an opportunity to experience a taste of college life and what is to come of their future.
They thanked us again. Isaac mentioned that next year they will be encouraging more Schalick kids to go!
Jay mentioned this program really helps to get the kids out of their shells, to express themselves and think outside of the box! Jay wished them all luck in the future.
Sandy passed around some booklets for Cumberland County Women’s Hall of Fame. She talked about all of the many professions we have had along the years. This was developed to recognize the women of Cumberland County that have made extraordinary contributions for the development of their community. Once a year the board celebrates and recognizes women that have made achievements and significant contributions in their professional field or to women and girls causes or in community endeavors. They have had a wide variety of professions that have been represented through the years. They had an engineer, physician, educator, business owner, attorney, boxing promoter, mayor, police officer, artist, environmentalist and a world renowned botanist.
Qualifications of being inducted would be: female, born or raised in Cumberland County or have been employed in Cumberland County and had contributions made in Cumberland County. Each candidate is judged on how she has enhanced the lives of other women and how her work and commitment has set an example for other women to follow. All of the proceeds from the annual gala allow them to provide scholarships for young women looking to further their education. Over the past 13 years, Cumberland County Women’s Hall of Fame has given approximately $25,000 to deserving young ladies.
Has this brought someone to mind someone who has made a significant contribution to our community? Sandy hopes you nominate them. The applications can be found on www.ccwhof.org or Facebook Cumberland county Women’s hall of fame. Sandy already has someone in mind who is a woman Rotarian. This individual deserves to be nominated. Jay mentioned if you have someone in mind, we could collectively put something together to recognize their efforts.
It's that time of year again! Sandy Hearing has the Boscov's Shopping Passes. Get yours for only $5 and enjoy 25% off on October 22nd. Last year Rotary purchased $700 in passes - and all of those funds returned to our club.
