Our Program
Fire Investigator Phillip McMahon from the Fire Investigation Bureau visited us today with Radiant, the Fire Dog. Radiant is a 2 year old yellow Labrador retriever who is trained to locate the presence of flammable liquids at a fire scene.
Phillip has been working in the fire service field for 32 years. He has been a career fireman for 11 years with the City of Vineland. He took a 16 week course at the academy to train with his K-9 partner, Radiant, who is considered an Arson Dog; Accelerant Action Dog; Ignitable Liquids Dog. He has 300 Million Receptors, compared to humans with 5-6 Million. He is trained in 21 Common Household Items or 42 if you count Raw and Burnt. He is trained in finding Petroleum, Acetone Materials and Alcohol. He does not miss on finding these items. He has 42 teeth and we were warned about getting in the way of his reward!! We observed a demonstration of Radiant’s skills locating a hidden cloth, which of course, he found!
During training he took 705 exams and failed at only one! Almost Perfect!!
Phillip trains weekly with Radiant. He eats a veal & pea dry mix and during off time he is part of the family. He loves to play with his other dog and Radiant sleeps with him waking him up to start their day.
Not many Fire Departments use K-9's so Phillip is on call with Radiant wherever needed.
Thank you Phillip and Radiant for an excellent program!
