Highlights from our April 23rd Meeting

President Andy Browne welcomed everyone. Jose Martinez and Melody Montgomery led us in the Pledge of Allegiance, Steve Schiavo performed the 4 Way Test and Jay Einstein gave the invocation. Linda Rumick was our notetaker and photographer with photo assistance from Gus Foster.

Andy thanked Harry Maloney and Gus Foster for setting up the room for the meeting and Karen Bauman for serving as Sergeant at Arms. We sang a rousing rendition of "Happy Birthday" to Sue Sauro.

President Andy and Dave Schad announced that Honorary Rotarian, Dr. Albert Marsh passed away recently. Dr. Marsh had retired to Sarasota, FL and was 95 years old. He was a long-time member of the Vineland Rotary, and had also served as a Rotary District Governor. He was instrumental in the completion of the clubhouse construction project for the Challenger League. Dr. Marsh donated $50,000 to the project which required approximately $250,000 to complete.

Joe Delgado reminded everyone that the Challenger League games are underway, with the conclusion on Saturday, June 1. Vineland Rotary volunteers are needed for that day to help the players as they reach base and eventually score. It's a very enriching experience - volunteer if you can!

Sherry Soutiere and Frank Rumick traveled the room collected Happy Dollars from so many happy Rotarians - including: Donna Bennett, Denise Jackson, Ken Dondero, Joe O'Rourke, Jay Einstein, Joe Delgado, Sherri Prescott, Andy Browne, Linda Rumick, Sue Sauro, Jose Martinez and Ed Morvay.

Two Rotarians Honored for Years of Service!

Denise Jackson and Joe Delgado received years of service pins from Ed Morvay, representing the Membership Committee. Joe has been a member for 20 years and Denise has been a member for 10 years. Congratulations Denise and Joe!

Congratulations, Sue!

Rotary Golf Outing

Josie Spinelli reminded everyone about the fast approaching Rotary Golf Outing -- Wednesday, May 15th. We still need donations for basket gifts for our basket raffle - please bring items for the baskets to our meeting this week. Items suggested include: basket of cheer items (fine spirits or wine), sporting event tickets beach themed items, lottery tickets, candles, grilling accessories, coffee gift cards (Starbucks, Dunkin, Wawa), pet lover items, game night for families, gift cards for restaurants, spas, etc., golf items and anything you can think of that people would enjoy winning!
Josie reminded everyone about the raffle supporting the golf outing -- two exceptional pieces of art created by outstanding local artist George Perez who donated two of his golf-related artistic illustrations to be raffled to benefit our first ever golf outing May 15th!
Chances will be offered at 5 tickets for $10! Pick which portrait you are interested in when you purchase your tickets.
Make sure you tell everyone about the outing -- friends, relatives, coworkers,m neighbors - we need sponsors, golfers and basket donations for this major fundraiser which will help us continue supporting projects to serve our community!

Our Program - Big Brothers Big Sisters

Rotarian Donna Bennett, CEO of the BBBS of Cumberland and Salem Counties introduced Danielle Clementson, Director of Programs for the organization. Donna has been with BBBS since 1992; Danielle joined the staff in 2002.

Danielle explained that the organization’s mission is to create one-to-one relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth. “Bigs” provide one to one mentoring for their “Little”.

There are several variations of the program. First, there is the Community Based program where matches spend time together doing activities in their community. Their time spent together depends on the activity and availability of the big and the little. The bigs partner with the little and their family. There are also Site Based Options where matches spend one to one time together at a designated location such as a school. The number and length of visits are determined by the volunteer’s availability and site schedule, usually weekly or bi-weekly.
There is also a Site Based Facilitated Option where matches meet at a designated location and a BBBS staff member is present. The Mentor 2.0 Option uses virtual communication and in-person interaction for high school student mentees.
And finally, there is High School Mentoring Option which is a before and after school mentoring program between high school student mentors and elementary school mentees.

Who is a Big?
  • A mentor to a youth between age 7 and young adulthood
  • A non-parental adult who is a role model to a Little
  • Bigs come from diverse backgrounds just like Littles
  • Defenders of potential
Danielle noted that BBBS’ number one priority is the safety and well-being of the youth served.
If you are interested in being a Big or a Mentor, contact BBBS today by phone at (856) 692-0916 or by email at agency@southjerseybigs.org

Good things always happen at a Vineland Rotary Club Meeting!!

Congratulations to our own Caitlin Terry!

Caitlin Terry has been chosen as the 2024 recipient of the Rowan University's Outstanding Alumni for Global Impact. This distinguished award is in honor of Caitlin's work providing fresh water and sanitation assistance with Hydromissions International where she is Director of Projects. Caitlin is an honorary member of Vineland Rotary.

Caitlin's recent projects span Central America and East Africa. She focuses on empowering small, remote communities by providing training on accessing clean drinking water though methods like drilling or rainwater catchment. She also assists on building sanitation facilities and delivering essential hygiene education.

Congratulations Caitlin on this well deserved, prestigious award!

Our District Youth Exchange Committee is urgently seeking our Club's support in hosting one of four
Inbound Youth Exchange Students.

TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE AS THESE STUDENTS MUST OBTAIN THEIR J1 Visa TO PARTICIPATE.  WITHOUT THE SUPPORT OF HOSTING CLUBS, THEIR DREAM SIMPLY CANNOT MATERIALIZE.

Your willingness to consider hosting a student is appreciated. Now, we ask that you confirm your readiness to participate by replying to this email.  The deadline for registration is May 8th.

Here are some key details:

Rotary Clubs can co-host a student, or offer to help with the monthly stipend of $100/month (10 months from Sept thru June), and also includes fees for attending RYLA, and registration to the District Conference.  The District covers the cost of the conference hotel room.  Note: To help with the stipend and fees, two rotary clubs can host a student and get credit for international service.

Host Rotary Clubs will have the student attend meetings once a month. They also must designate a Rotarian as a counselor for the student. The current club president, incoming club president, counselor, host families and children over 18 in the host family home must be vetted.

Hosting a student in a family is approximately for 3 1/2 months.  We recommend three (3) host families, but it is not engraved in stone.

Host Rotary Club members do not have to host the student in their home. Members of the Community can host a student in their home but must live in the same school district.

Public Schools are required to take up to 5 exchange students per year as per the Department of State.

Please reach out as soon as possible to discuss how you can be a part of this life-changing experience. We can explain everything.

Thank you for considering this call to action.

Yours in Rotary Service,

Diane Rotondelli, PDG                                                     Thomas Kozempel
Youth Services Inbound Coordinator                               District Governor
